We cycled to Alaska - virtually!

27 April 2020

Charity 12 hour Zwift Takeover. On Sunday 26 April 2020 Club members took part in a charity fundraising event on the virtual cycling platform Zwift. The total raised at time of writing is £2,721, with a target set of £5,000.

A total of 63 athletes took part in this 12 hour challenge to ride as many kilometers as we could manage, with the total meaning the average distance covered by each rider was 155.77kms. With everyone competing remotely during the Covid19 lockdown conditions, we all communicated via the game itself and through the various apps we've now become so familiar with, such as Houseparty, Messenger and Zoom. Members posted regularly on the members Facebook group page, through videos and photos. With the usual sense of humour and banter pervading the messages and replies, it was business-as-usual for a club event, even during these strange times.

The titanic efforts of all the members that took part, meant that we managed to cover an amazing total of 7293.6kms in the 12 hour window between 7am and 7pm. That's the equivalent of riding from Cardiff to Anchorage in Alaska! Quite a feat. Everyone did what they could on the day with some huge individual totals being clocked. Some sore legs and backsides after the event, but it was all for a good cause, with us raising well over £2000.00 for the 'Feed the Heath' campaign, which is providing free meals to NHS staff working around the clock to maintain our national health service in the face of the current virus pandemic.

The fundraising page is still open until 19 May 2020 via this link:
