It looks as if some authors of articles are forgetting to switch the "featured item"option on, or to give their article a category. If you do this and hit save it's probably difficult to find the article again to edit it as it won't appear on the front page.

To help you out I've added a new menu link on the left side of the page called "Uncategorised items" (for "special" users, i.e. article authors). If the above problem happens to you have a look in the list on that page and you should be able to find your article and edit it to get it to appear where you want.
