Cardiff Triathletes was formed in 1984 by a small group of people interested in the, then, new sport of triathlon.
The objectives of the club are to encourage and promote the sport of triathlon in the Cardiff and the surrounding area.
The club is affiliated to the British Triathlon Federation via Welsh Triathlon and individual members are encouraged to join these organisations.
Just a little reminder about membership fees, so please read this carefully as, similarly to a drafting warning given at the start of a triathlon event, this is your first warning and it applies to EVERYONE.
As the club is growing in size (>150 members currently!) it is becoming extremely difficult to get to know everyone and recognise what type of member there are. As a reminder, we have 3 options for membership:
1) Annual- pay £25 per year plus £4 for EVERY swim session. It is YOUR responsibility to pay for every swim session you attend, so don’t wait for someone to ask you for your money. In the 2-3 months I have been membership secretary not a single person has paid me to swim, although we have over 30 members in this category. You MUST give your £4 to Andrew Deans, Claire Manson, Lawrie Philips or myself before you get into the pool. If you can’t find one of us, you may give your money to the coach. Annual members are not entitled to subsidised kit.
2) Standing order
This is our preferred membership option. All members paying standing order fees are helping to secure the club’s future and contributing to the development of the coaching, training sessions and the Christmas party! They are entitled to subsidised kit.
a. Once weekly swim- pay £15 per month to swim once a week. We understand that there may be weeks where you can’t make your usual swim session so you might swim twice in the next week, but it is UP TO YOU to amend your membership fees if you find you are attending more swim sessions than you are paying for.
b. Two or three weekly swims- pay £20 per month to swim twice or three times a week.
3) Student/senior citizen rates- available for standing order members only. Student rate is for FULL TIME students who show me a valid student card. Student concessions must be confirmed in October every year, so to continue paying a student membership fee you must show me your valid student ID for that academic year.
If anyone reads this and realises they are not paying the correct membership fee please speak to me or amend it by the end of April. From May, anyone found not paying the correct fees (including annual members on PAYG swimming) will receive one final warning before being asked to leave the club. I’m sorry if this sounds harsh, however this is necessary to ensure fair treatment of all members. Please remember that the committee and many of the coaches are not paid for their work for Cardiff triathletes, but give up time they would otherwise spend with family, relaxing, training or wedding planning (me!) to ensure that the club is as successful, fun and inclusive as it is!

On the basis that there is usually a route posted already by now, I figured folks aren't too keen due to weather. However, I still plan to head out but instead of a mountain in 'the grim', I thought about a rolling route.
Llantrissant Rd - Royal Glam Hospital - Tonyrefail - Blackmill - Heol Y Cyw Common - Pencoed - St Mary Hill - Penllyn - Aberthin - Peterstone - Fairwater. About 45 miles.

Just thinking while some folks are still sunning themselves in Majorca, we might have some sunshine on Saturday, albeit a few degrees cooler I suspect.
Thought I would suggest a route for the morning, leaving Maindy at 9am as usual. The wind is looking to be changeable so no real defined best direction. As such thought out towards Usk might be good as its usually nice inthe sun, plus theres a cafe at the garden centre at about 2/3rds of the way round if folks fancy it.
Propose to head out up Rhiwbina Hill, round Caerphilly, Rudry, Basalleg, Caerleon, Usk, Catsash and back on the flats. About 60 miles with the bulk of the climbs being in the first 20 miles and then pretty rolling and obviously flat at the end.
I have tried to plot it on Google maps so its public but its not as technical as some and it does not show elavation. Whos up for it?
Also, if anyone can post in FB that would be great as I cant do that in work.

Once again thank you to everyone who showed support for the winter league this year, taking part in what was sometimes very cold and tough conditions. The enthusiasm and motivation of all involved has made it all worth it this year. People seemed to enjoy the healthy competition with fellow club members and kept things interesting with lots of banter. Hope to see lots more of you joining in next year.
Jon Airey has taken the club winter league championships cup for 2013 and very deservedly. We waited with baited breath this morning after, naturally, he left Fairwater pool first...like a greyhound's rabbit! Dan Miles, Matt and Stuart were all in hot pursuit to chase him down. Jon showed true grit and battled to stay ahead and emerged first across the line. Not bad for 8am on a Sunday morning.

In my new role as membership secretary, I'm updating the members' database. As such, please could anyone paying the concessionary rate show a current student card/proof of concession to me or Andrew Deans before 8th March. As a reminder, concession membership fees apply to senior citizens and full-time students. If this no longer applies to you, please speak to Lawrie or myself about amending your direct debit payment.
Fancy a go at a 25 mile cycle time trial with a partner?
Every year we enter a few teams for the event at Port Talbot/Neath which this year is on Sunday 17th March. Basically its 25 mile against the clock in pairs. You are racing against the clock so it doesn't matter if you are Wiggo like as you won’t get left behind! Course is pretty much flat. You don’t need a TT bike, just a racing bike is fine. Male/female/mixed categories so no excuse!
Obviously you are free to sort out your own entry, however it would be good to coordinate in a single submission. Cost is £9 each person. See me at a Tues swim, Wed turbo, or message me if you need to chat/find out more.
This could be a logistical nightmare so I’m going to do this in 2 passes.
1. If you are interested, check your diaries and if keen then post interest here or on club facebook page. This will give me a chance to see how we are shaping up. Only do this if you can commit. Contact me outside of this link if you have a query/need to find out more before responding. This is one of those things that, because it’s a team, if you commit you MUST turn up on the day otherwise you let the Club and your partner down. If it were me I’d expect you to stump up the rest of the entry fee too! You need to respond by 6th Feb to show interest/availability. That will give me a couple of weeks to sort pairs out so you can get out and practice!
2. I will confirm pairs and sort out forms etc by 26th Feb and submit by end Feb as entry closes 5th March. Therefore you will need to have paid by the Tues 26th swim (give cash to me or Chairman Deans). No payment – no entry.
Sorry if this sounds a bit official but am trying to avoid a last minute panic! Ideally club shirts should be worn as it’s an official event – not vital, but it’s your chance to look like a pro for the day! No doubt we could borrow some if you don’t have one yet.
With the size of the club it will be difficult for me to get pairing right as I don’t know everyone. I can talk to you about your level etc, but chat amongst yourselves and feel free to nominate your own pairs when registering interest. To get the best of the race you must be evenly matched in terms of ability, and be happy with the backside you’ll be looking at for an hour or so!
As an indication – last year the winners did 53 mins, last place 1hr 21 mins (@19mph). Club did between 1.03 and 1.06 for mid-pack placings.
